Emily Demorest for Kalmazoo City Commission
Hello friends,

Most of you will know me as an advocate, organizer, activist, educator, and social worker. If you will allow me, I would also be honored to serve as one of your Kalamazoo City Commissioners. Politics requires money, so I humbly ask you to donate to my campaign.

Change requires us to organize and stand together on all fronts- In the streets, in the election booth, and in the chamber. It requires us to make a radical commitment to equity, democracy, and anti-racist action so that we can create a society and economy that respects and uplifts every member of our community.

I believe the last should be first and the first should be last. This means directing our public resources and government to act on the needs of our most vulnerable people first. I've spent the last decade working to make our city a better place for residents. During my six years with Communities In Schools I worked with the district and partners to ensure our young people had access to critical resources. I have supported our Common Grounds community Gardens, Peace Jam, Michigan United, Movimiento Cosecha, and adult education programs. Most recently, I worked with a team of dedicated advocates to operate the emergency cold weather shelters during our February State of Emergency with historic cold temperatures. We can do amazing things when we work together.

While City Commission is a non-partisan race, I am proudly running on a socialist platform as a member of the Socialist Party USA. As socialists, we reject the politics of practicality. Demands for an end to exploitation, an end to the profitable destruction of ecosystems, and full recognition of human rights are not bargaining chips for political gain. They are the foundations of the society that we deserve.

My local priorities are:

  • A fully inclusive housing first policy, including policies to hold predatory landlords accountable
  • A continuation of our commitment to non-cooperation with ICE .
  • Robust and urgent action to prepare for the effects of climate change
  • Full public accountability and transparency for the Foundation for Excellence
  • Development without displacement

Here is what your donation will go towards:
First priority- paying the artists that support the campaign
Second priority- printing materials for neighborhood level outreach
Third priority- promotional material for mailings and door to door canvassing
Thank you, beloved community, and I am so excited for the opportunity to work on your behalf.

In solidarity,
